Anna regretted not being better prepared when she left the hospital in search of Victor’s apartment and any evidence that may lead her to either Denis or the people who had tried to kill Simon and her. If in fact they were two different people. And she had to believe that they were. She could only take so many secrets involving Denis, and the thought that he would try and kill her is one she wasn’t ready to accept. But right now, she wished she had brought the USB port adapter that Alastair made so she could have read the jump drive from her phone.

“Here ya’ go,” The cabbie stopped the meter and collected the fare from Anna before she crawled out of the back of the cab. “Do ya’ want me to wait?”

“No thank you,” Anna thanked the driver and closed the door of the cab behind her.

Anna had the cabbie drop her at the end of the gravel pathway that sat about twenty feet from the entrance to the Black Swan Pub. Behind her, Anna could hear the wheels of the cab struggle against the loose gravel near the road as the driver turned the car around and headed back into the centre of London where his fares surely would not require such a long drive. The dust from the tires began to settle at Anna’s feet as she contemplated her next move.

She always remembered Denis talking about coming here after a difficult assignment. He said it was always a place he could come to clear his head and recalibrate. Operations took a lot out of agents. Especially when they got emotional; like when she and Denis broke a human trafficking ring being run out of Turkey. Anna remembered that she went on a weeklong hike in the Lake Tahoe area and through the Sierra Nevada mountains range, and she needed to do it alone. Denis had returned home to ‘decompress’ as he called it, in ‘rural solitude’. She didn’t know much about Denis’ past, but she knew he was raised outside of London and found solace in returning here when he needed to think. Denis only brought Anna here once, and even though he never opened up about his past, she knew that it was a special place to him. She only hoped he had the same feeling of respite when he came here and that he may search out this spot now.

Anna began to walk towards the pub and was struck by how much it looked like a traditional British cottage than a restaurant and inn. The faded yellow stone brick struck a vibrant contrast to the piercing blue sky that hung over the building. The cedar shingles lay in perfect symmetry to the lines of the building, with a crescent shaped line of moss that ran across one corner of the roof. A cherry tree stood mere feet from the front of the building casting a shadow from the branches that reached out over a section of the roof.
